# Mack Pinnacle Common Problems & What to Check | Big Rig Risk

> Mack Pinnacle: documented problems include injector cups and camshaft lobe wander. OEM part prices and what to inspect before you buy used.

**Verdict:** inspect

The MP8's known money pits are the injector cups and the aftertreatment: a full injector cup job runs $1,500–$2,500, camshaft work $4,000–$7,000, and a full aftertreatment replacement can top $5,000. Check for cup-seal coolant leaks and regen/NOx faults before buying.

**Documented failure risks:**
- Injector leaking down causes loss of prime / no: Injector leaking down causes loss of prime / no-start; reported as a recurring issue --
- injector cups: Copper injector cups seal injectors to the head and often start leaking between 300k-600k miles, pushing fuel into coolant and air into the fuel rail.
- camshaft lobe wander: Pressed cam lobes can spin on the hollow shaft on higher-mileage units, usually past 400,000 miles, requiring camshaft replacement.
- SCR/NOx sensor derate: SCR efficiency faults from drifting or failing NOx sensors trigger a staged derate sequence ending in a 5 mph speed limit.
- DPF high soot load: High soot load fault code SPN 3719 FMI 16 requires a DPF bake or exchange, or full aftertreatment replacement in severe cases.
- EGR cooler: EGR cooler core is prone to soot glazing and micro-fractures leading to internal coolant leaks; neglected units risk a five-figure repair.
- turbo actuator: A single failed turbo actuator calibration can leave the vanes at an unproductive angle, restricting boost and power.
- injector cups (post-2023 production): Cracked fuel injector cup assemblies are a persistent issue in post-2023 production MP8 engines, with some operators reporting repeat cup replacements before 500,000 miles.
